The sound engineer

Without sound engineer, nothing works in the music business. Reason enough to devote an article to the sound engineer. The sound engineer is a versatile profession that can be achieved through two different ways. Thomas Noack, former clay master of the stages and orchestra of the city Bielefeld, gives detailed information about the profession of sound engineer.

Event engineer with a focus sound

A training as a specialist for event technicians with a focus on sound is a way to qualify for the profession of sound engineer. De examination is credited by the IHK.

After several years of professional practice, a continuing education to the master for event technology is possible, but the master letter and the training have rather little relevance in terms of sound technology.

Private training institutes such as SAE or Abbey Road are another option to train for the profession. The costs of the apprentices themselves and the final certificates are awarded by the institutes.

Workplaces of sound technicians

If you then managed, sound technicians find a workplace in the live sound and large tour companies or rather in the regional area at event companies. Alternatives are the areas of theater, television and radio. Depending on the use and focus vary physical and mental effort. The working hours are also irregular due to the use at night and on Sundays and public holidays.

Musical qualifications are not mandatory, but helpful. A good, musical feeling and a trained hearing requirement for work as sound engineer.

Sound technician or clay?

Important is the difference between sound engineer and clay. The sound engineer has a rather commercial training, but the clayer, on the other hand, usually an academic study with a special focus on technology and music. There are only a few training institutes. You forgive Bachelor and Master. The clay master must be able to play instruments and read notes.

Nevertheless, a sound engineer with good references can certainly recommend for claymaster jobs. Whether the musical knowledge is sufficient, depends on the requirements of the job. So a sound engineer can be used in a theater in the spectacle and musical. In the opera, where the clay master is also a executive musician, a high level of musical qualification is required.
