New Music: Apostrophes – “On My Own”

554996_585997701430422_384212200_n (1)

When we last covered New Jersey’s Apostrophes back in January they had just dropped their second single.  Since then, the melodic metal band from Bloomfield, NJ has had quite an interesting couple of months. Despite numerous lineup changes Francisco J. Paz (Vocals, Guitars) and Robert Mendoza (Drums) remained determined to preserve the future of the band. James Capezio and Jamil Limaj were recently recruited to fill out the guitar and bass duties respectively.

“On My Own” was recorded in Rutherford, NJ at Mercury Recording Studios,  which has also worked with other local bands like Killed The Fixtion. Under the watchful eyes and ears of Producer/General Manager Jerry Ramos, Apostrophes have taken great leaps in terms of musicianship and sound quality since their debut. Last week the band announced that “On My Own” has been submitted to BOTBZ’s Battle of the Bands.

New Music: Gatherer – “And Now Everyone Sings The Blues”

gathererband

New Jersey’s Gatherer made quite the first impression on me during last week’s show at Maxwell’s. The band recently released  ”And Now Everyone Sings The Blues,”  the first track off their upcoming full-length. The song continues their streak of stark, emotional lyrics which are accompanied by intricate melodies and intense rhythms. Vocalist Christian Berrigan has already proven he can scream with the best of them, but it was surprising to hear he’s expanded his range with some clean vocals as well.

Caught Between A Rock And A Sad Place will be released independently on June 18th. Gatherer is currently on tour so be sure to check the tour dates below. Additionally there’s also set up an Indiegogo site for pre-orders for the CD along with limited edition 12″ LPs.

New Music: Mixtapes – “Elevator Days”

tumblr_m6slmsf6hm1qc4sjp

I’m not in the business of declaring any genre to be “dead,” but pop-punk has been in a dormant stage in the last several years. Too many bands have wasted time making attempts at being the next Blink-182, or Fall Out Boy (for the sake of relevance). There’s still plenty of talented bands out there, but few have made an impact on me like Mixtapes.

Hailing from the land of Bengals and WKRP, Mixtapes are something of a big deal for me. On the surface, the music is no different than most pop-punk bands you’ve heard: with plenty of three-chord riffs and catchy melodies. Lyrically they’re an absolute riot. There’s a plethora of sarcastic quips and pop culture references to be found and quite frankly I’m a sucker for any song that can properly reference Die Hard With A Vengeance. For instance, band member Ryan Rockwell stated the following regarding their recent signing to No Sleep Records last year:

“We are really excited to be signing to No Sleep Records and making our first full length, we are currently in the studio and making magic. We are excited to be spreading the lyrics of Cam’ron, good fashion techniques, and also the opportunity to make friends of many races, nationalities, and even different musical taste (maybe). We are recording just over 20 songs and can’t wait to see what makes the album. As for the sound it sounds pretty much what we sound like, although less acoustic.”

Underneath their blanket of smart-ass remarks, there’s a distinct vulnerability that underlines many of their songs. They’re far from being the first band to ever tackle subjects like life and love, but it’s done in such a way that’s both relatable and fun. The upcoming album Ordinary Silence will be Mixtapes’ sophomore effort for No Sleep. The fine people at The AV Club have dibs on the track, so give “Elevator Days” a listen here.

New Music: Time Travels – “Secret”

562211_388624594533178_1549805097_n

After hearing these guys featured on the last night’s episode of The Neeshcast I had to spread the love. Time Travels is an Indie Rock band hailing from Hudson Valley, NY and their latest single “Secrets” (off the upcoming EP of the same name) is the epitome of “catchy.” Frank McGinnis kicks out the Ben Folds-style jams with his charming vocals and clever ivory-tickling. Couple that with the bouncy drumming of  Samantha Niss and you have the ingredients for a perfect sing-along Spring anthem. It should also be mentioned that the group vocals at the end are a nice touch.

The Secret EP will be out on April 23rd.

New Music: Skyline Cinema – “Give Up” [UPDATE]

artworks-000043759944-ak2rpr-t500x500
Earlier today Philadelphia, PA-based band Skyline Cinema have debuted their debut single “Give Up.” The Post-Hardcore/Indie trio cites Circa Survive and Brand New among their influences, which is a fairly accurate comparison from the first notes played. Vocalist/guitarist Mackenzie Iames has great vocal range akin to Jacqui Sandell of My Arcadia fame and hopefully we’ll get to hear even more of that in future releases.

Speaking of future releases, the band plans to release their debut EP this June. “Give Up” is currently streaming via Soundcloud, but the MP3 can be purchased on Amazon.

UPDATE: “Give Up” is also available on iTunes and Spotify.

New Music: Strychnia – “Hallucinogenic Desecration”

324109931-1

This isn’t exactly a new song, but a) It’s Metal Monday and b) I’ve been something on a Metal kick these past few days, so it balances out. I was originally planning on waiting until next month when Strychnia sets on dropping a brand-new single, but this song was too intense for me not to pass up. “Hallucinogenic Desecration” comes off Strychnia’s 2011 debut EP The Anatomy of Execution. These guys are representing the New Jersey metal scene to the fullest with tracks chockablock with punishing riffs and cataclysmic breakdowns. Want further proof? Give this a listen and check out the full album on Bandcamp:

Reanimated Monstrosity will be out on May 17th. As reported by Horns Up Rocks, the new EP will also feature guest vocals from Dying Fetus’ John Gallagher as well as a cover from metal legends Pantera.

Reanimated Monstrosity tracklisting:
1. Reanimated Monstrosity (feat. John Gallagher)
2. War Sermon
3. Killdozer
4. Cephalectomy
5. Slaughtered (Pantera cover)

New Music: Nikki Sue & The Bad News – “Nothing Gold” (Couch By Couchwest)

contact-pic

For those of us who were too busy too broke to make the yearly sojourn to Austin, Texas for South By Southwest there’s a pretty sweet alternative called Couch By Couchwest. “What is Couch By Couchwest,” you ask? I’d tell you myself, but the description on their website states it better than I ever could:

CXCW is an annual online music festival that is for everyone. No badges, lanyards, bracelets, parking fees, ticket lines, exclusive parties, VIP tents, porta-potties, babysitters, dogsitters, expensive beer prices, or crappy hotel rooms…just the sweet comfort of your own couch. Here’s how it works, artists and bands from all over the globe record a video performance for us from their living rooms, kitchens, porches, bathrooms, you name it…pretty much anywhere but a stage…and we post them during the week of the festival (March 10 – 16, 2013).

Indie Folk/Country heroes Nikki Sue & The Bad News have had a busy 2013. Between extensive touring throughout the Garden State (including a quick stop in Charlottesville, VA with Don Ryan) they’re working on a new album there’s quite a bit going on. “Nothing Gold,” a previously unreleased song, has been performed live by the band, but now it’s been given the CXCW treatment. Enjoy!

Catch Nikki Sue & The Bad News live at the following dates:

Mar 16 - Studio @ Webster Hall w/ Big Wilson River/Don Ryan/Jay Everett – New York, NY

Mar 22 – Alphabet Lounge w/ Don Ryan/The Battery Electric – New York, NY

June 15 – 3rd Annual Fresh Air Festival w/ Don’t Upset The Bear/Don Ryan/Jay Everett/Big Wilson River – Oakland, NJ

Jul 27 – Roxy and Dukes Rockabilly Roadhouse - Dunellen, NJ

New Music: Lionel Pryor – “Gold Coins”

lionel pryor

Hasbrouck Heights, NJ’s very own “Instru-Metal” trio Lionel Pryor are ringing in the New Year by releasing a new track “Gold Coins.” I don’t know if the band has been listening to a lot of High On Fire lately, but this song is drenched in Sludge/Stoner Metal goodness. It’s a mild departure from the Thrash/prog elements heard on their album Siam, this is the start of what should be an exciting era for the band.

You can hear the track below as well as download it on their Bandcamp page.

New Music: Holy City Zoo – “Givin’ Him The Business”

62719_433590295895_4360218_n

The presents have been opened, massive amounts of food have been consumed and this bottle of wine is just about empty. Christmas Day is far from over and New Brunswick, New Jersey’s Holy City Zoo have given us the gift of new music. “Givin’ Him The Business” is the first track released off their upcoming Everybody Sells For More EP, which will drop on January 4, 2013.

Now if you’ll excuse me, it’s time to down some more egg nog and get a circle pit going around the Christmas tree.
