New Music: Apostrophes – “On My Own”

554996_585997701430422_384212200_n (1)

When we last covered New Jersey’s Apostrophes back in January they had just dropped their second single.  Since then, the melodic metal band from Bloomfield, NJ has had quite an interesting couple of months. Despite numerous lineup changes Francisco J. Paz (Vocals, Guitars) and Robert Mendoza (Drums) remained determined to preserve the future of the band. James Capezio and Jamil Limaj were recently recruited to fill out the guitar and bass duties respectively.

“On My Own” was recorded in Rutherford, NJ at Mercury Recording Studios,  which has also worked with other local bands like Killed The Fixtion. Under the watchful eyes and ears of Producer/General Manager Jerry Ramos, Apostrophes have taken great leaps in terms of musicianship and sound quality since their debut. Last week the band announced that “On My Own” has been submitted to BOTBZ’s Battle of the Bands.

Listen to the track and all of their music here on Reverbnation.

Tours: Science (NJ, NY)

When we last left our heroes they were teaming up with Lionel Pryor, Gatherer and All Sensory Void to do battle against the forces of crappy music. Now that the weather’s getting warmer and we’re no longer huddled under blankets in fear of freezing to death, NJ band Science is touring this June. The band will be spending the month hitting a number of venues in the NJ/NY area including the Court Tavern in New Brunswick for the Tiny Giant Summer Bummer. The three-day music festival is the retooled and rescheduled version of the Tiny Giant Winter Beach Ball, which saw most of its events canceled due to inclement weather. Science’s tour dates are listed below. Also, I’ll drop a link to their song “Maybe,” a bonus track off their 2011 album Don’t Panic! It’s been on heavy rotation in my iPod for the past few months and hopefully you’ll soon be suffering from the same affliction.

Videos: Janet LaBelle – “Wide Awake Dreaming”

529308_10151404642702129_2045457468_n

Back in the frozen wastelands of January, NJ born singer/songwriter Janet LaBelle warmed our hearts with the fantastic video for “You Don’t Get It (So Forget It),” a simple and heartfelt ode to lost love. Los Angeles served as the setting for that video, but Janet has returned home to Brooklyn to record her new single/video “Wide Awake Dreaming.”

The “dream sequences” were shot on location at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. Director Chris Carlone creates elegant imagery in a Terrence Malick-type fashion, but even with the constant stream of impressive visuals, the focus is never never taken off of the music. Utilizing no more than a piano and strings courtesy of Nicole Scorsone (of River City Extension fame), LaBelle has created a charmingly melancholy tune filled with hope as well as intense longing. Janet has always taken a refreshing “less-is-more” approach to her music, never letting it get bogged down with needless overproduction, which is why she made the decision to record the vocals for this song live.

“It’s important for me to bring my music as close to raw emotion as possible. Recording live hides nothing and helps me get closer to my audience.”

Janet Labelle is currently working on her fourth album. In the meantime, see the video posted below. “Wide Awake Dreaming” is also available here on iTunes or here on CDBaby. She will also be performing at the following dates and venues:

5/15 – Bowery Electric in New York, NY 9pm

5/25 – Spike Hill in Brooklyn, New York 9pm

6/1 –  The Record Collector in Bordentown, NJ 7pm

6/22 – Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park, NJ 12pm

“Revenge of the Sixth”: Hobsnobbery’s Top 5 Star Wars-Related Songs

A long time ago on a playlist far, far away…

If you’ve spent anytime on the internet this past weekend you’ve probably read more than a few Facebook status updates and tweets screaming “May the 4th be with you!” It’s amazing how a simple play on words based on a classic Star Wars line became an unofficial holiday among die-hard fans and Disney’s shareholders. May 4th was a cute and all, but having sworn my allegiance to the dark side of the Force years ago I have executed my very own “Order 66″ and will celebrate Revenge of the Sixth!

tumblr_m3mv66hbjj1r974a5o1_500

The Star Wars franchised has become so ingrained in our pop culture it’s almost gone past the point of fandom and become something of a religion. It’s almost ridiculous, the sheer amount of nods made in movies, television shows, books and even music. There were some obvious references made by bands like Standby Red 5, Jedi Mind Tricks and Bossk. Here’s a list of a few of my favorite Star Wars-themed songs.

5) Hot Waffles – “George Lucas Raped Our Childhood” (2005)

Not every musical tribute to Star Wars is meant to be celebratory. Sometimes they can be downright scathing. When George Lucas formally announced that he was beginning development of the prequel trilogy we Star Wars fans pretty much lost our collective shit. After years of hinting of their existence it was finally happening and fans couldn’t contain the excitement. Then The Phantom Menace premiered in the Summer of 1999 resulting those same fans lost their collective shit for an entirely different reason.

Comedic rock duo Hot Waffles (comprised of brothers Chris and Tim Waffle) created a hilariously catchy ode chronicling the rage of Star Wars fans Chris and Tim lament the increasingly poor decisions of George Lucas, Sci-Fi’s equivalent of Todd Margaret. With so many lyrical jabs at Lucas you can chalk it up to another set of disgruntled fans, but what Hot Waffles parody isn’t just the movies but even the irrational anger of some fans. If the song title offends you, you’ve obviously not heard any of the insults hurled at Lucas. The biggest punchline comes during the last verse, which expertly sums up the rationale of angry uber-fans:

And I swear as sure as the twin sunset on Tatooine that I will never give lucas another dollar of my money at least until the Episode 3 Super Special Edition DVDs come out, I gotta get those.

4) blink-182 – “A New Hope” (1997)

It’s pretty easy for anyone to write Star Wars-related songs pointing out the shortcomings of its creator. In the case of SoCal pop-punk trio blink-182, there’s no better way to pay homage than to express your undying affection for a fictional character.  On “A New Hope,” one of the deep cuts off the classic album Dude Ranch, bassist Mark Hoppus swoons and pines for the cinnamon bun-coiffed leader of the Rebel Alliance. At its core, the song is simply a tune about unrequited love, but this one happens to have a slew of Star Wars references. It should be considered creepy, but it’s hard not to feel bad for our protagonist with lines such as “Every night I fall asleep with you, and I wake up alone.”

3) Supernova – “Chewbacca” (1994)

Show of hands: who wanted to be Han Solo when they grew up? Let’s run down the list: He has his own ship only rivaled in badassery by Boba Fett’s Slave 1, he battles bounty hunters and gangsters. Now, with another show of hands: who wanted to be Chewbacca as a kid? Don’t worry–I’ll wait. Despite being a loyal friend and companion no thanks to the Wookie life debt, Chewbacca always played second banana to everyone’s favorite smuggler. At least Supernova thought Kashykk’s “walking carpet” cool enough to get his own tribute in song.

Probably best known for having been featured in writer/director Kevin Smith’s slacker flick Clerks, “Chewbacca” isn’t the most complex song ever written. For a minute and a half you hear Supernova’s constant, driving bassline, drums and the occasional distortion-heavy guitars. The only difference is this song has some pretty funny impersonations of Jabba the Hutt and Chewie himself. What’s the Wookie word for “I’m not supposed to be here today?”

2) Weird Al Yankovic – “The Saga Begins” (1999)

The public response to Star Was Episode 1 ranged from negative to positive slightly less negative, but Lucas still got his wish: the Star Wars saga was once again on the minds of seemingly everyone who wasn’t a Trekkie. Weird Al Yankovic, the master of the parody song and the bane of Billy Corgan’s existence, had been bitten by the Star Wars bug. In his midst of his geek-induced fever dream, Weird Al wrote what might be my favorite parody titled “The Saga Begins.”

Using Don McLean’s classic “American Pie” as the template, the parody’s backstory is just as entertaining as the song itself. Written before the official release of The Phantom Menace, Al used internet spoilers to write the lyrics, which are from the point of view of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Being a pretty good sport about the experience, Lucasfilm and Don McLean both spoke very highly of the parody, which is something that can’t be said for Coolio.

1) MC Chris – “Fette’s Vette” (2001)

The cult of Boba Fettt is still a mystery to me. The bounty hunter had a total of maybe 5 minutes of screen time in the original trilogy and probably even less lines in the script. Despite his shortage of time in front of the camera, Fett remains one of Star Wars’ biggest badasses. Nerdcore rapper MC Chris paid tribute to the jet pack-clad Madalorian on “Fette’s Vette” from his 2001 album Life’s a Bitch and I’m Her Pimp. When it comes to Star Wars references, MC Chris puts most of us to shame on this track. To be honest, unless you’re an avid fan you might not even bother listening to this one. My favorite line would have to be,

“Guess for me that’s not an option/can’t say that with more clarity/Me going legit would be like Jar Jar in speech therapy.”

God bless you, MC Chris.

News: The Dodos Sign To Polyvinyl Records, Tease Upcoming Album

Dodos

“Good news, everyone!” (insert Professor Farnsworth reference here). The past few weeks have been rife with label signings. Just a couple of weeks ago one of my favorite  punk bands Iron Chic signed to Bridge 9 Records, then on Tuesday New Jersey’s gates were picked up by Pure Noise Records. Now I’m getting word that San Francisco indie duo The Dodos have been signed by Polyvinyl Records. The Illinois-based label has an insane lineup of bands like of Montreal, Vivian Girls and Japandroids (you know, that band I wouldn’t shut up about last year). Details are relatively scarce at the moment, with the band posting a tweet earlier today. Here’s the announcement video which features a snippet of a brand-new track:

Formed back in 2005, The Dodos are one of those bands that just clicked with me from the moment I first heard them. As a matter of fact I can honestly say that they were partially responsible for my creation of this blog (the rest of the credit goes to the copious amounts of Full Throttle I drank while listening to them). Riding high on a caffeine/indie rock binge I heard “Fables” play on Last.fm and all I remember thinking was “I’ve gotta blog the hell out of this song!” I wrote this winded pop culture reference-heavy piece about how that song changed my life. Then I realized I sounded way too much like Natalie Portman’s “MPDG” alter-ego Sam in the 2004 drama Garden State.

The blog post was then scrapped due to the intense fanboy-level prattling that ensued. Now that the band has some great news to share I can successfully revisit that post with 0% guilt. You see, folks, it’s all about putting things into perspective. At any rate, that’s enough out of me for now. The Dodos’ new album will be hitting Polyvinyl soon so I will definitely be looking forward to that. In the meantime, here’s that song I’ve been rambling about this whole time. This is “Fables” off of their 2009 album Time To Die. Enjoy.

Player 1 Press Start: Professor Shyguy – “Science, Life, & ABCs”

556738_466017166802669_273246914_n

Nashville-based “chip-pop” artist Professor Shyguy (real name Brandt Cooley) has just completed work on his second album titled Rated Heart. Having dubbed himself the “poor nerd’s Justin Timberlake,” Cooley croons over R&B/Pop-themed electronic melodies and beats, which cover a myriad of geek-related topics including videogames, Dr. Who and even the popular web series The Guild.

Rated Heart touts some impressive guest stars like Dragon Ball Z narrator Kyle Hebert and Descendants of Erdrick‘s Amanda Lepre. Cooley has taken to crowdfunding giant Kickstarter to obtain funding for a physical release for Rated Heart, plus a music video for the track “RPG Song.” You can watch the lyric video for another new track titled “Science, Life, & ABCs,” a pretty slick song  in which each of the lyrics are in alphabetical order.

Videos: Sorry OK Yes – “Ice Cold”

421530_10151298984993803_1940472749_n (1)

Grab your pencils, boys and girls! It’s time for a Hobsnobbery Pop Quiz!

Your band needs a concept for a new music video. Do you:

A) Use cleverly-edited footage of a live performance
B) Shoot an artistic, abstract short film
C) Use scenes from the 1981 Sylvester Stallone soccer movie Escape To Victory

If you chose “C,” you and Sorry OK Yes have something in common. Now based in Toronto, the Italian rockers Davide Materazzi and Simone Ferrari have chosen some interesting source material for the video of their latest single “Ice Cold.” Even as a film buff this movie completely escaped me: Escape To Victory stars Sylvester “I am the luhh!” Stallone, Michael “What’s It All About?” Caine and soccer legend Pelé. The basic gist of the film is a soccer match between Allied P.O.W.’s and German players during World War II. While Rocky Balboa and Alfred Pennyworth do battle with futbol-playing Nazis, the French Resistance and British soldiers helped plan their escape. As you’ve probably guessed, this has absolutely nothing to do with the song. The only explanation given by the band is, “The video it’s a delirious mash-up of our favourite childhood movie.”

Now you know, and knowing is half the battle

Sorry OK Yes have an interesting and controversial approach to their music: all of it is available absolutely free sans the merch, some of  which might offend the delicate sensibilities of a certain Canadian rock band. Oh, well. Chad Kroger will get over it.

New Music: Gatherer – “And Now Everyone Sings The Blues”

gathererband

New Jersey’s Gatherer made quite the first impression on me during last week’s show at Maxwell’s. The band recently released  ”And Now Everyone Sings The Blues,”  the first track off their upcoming full-length. The song continues their streak of stark, emotional lyrics which are accompanied by intricate melodies and intense rhythms. Vocalist Christian Berrigan has already proven he can scream with the best of them, but it was surprising to hear he’s expanded his range with some clean vocals as well.

Caught Between A Rock And A Sad Place will be released independently on June 18th. Gatherer is currently on tour so be sure to check the tour dates below. Additionally there’s also set up an Indiegogo site for pre-orders for the CD along with limited edition 12″ LPs.

Videos: Screaming Females & Garbage – “Because The Night”

screamingfemales

I probably shouldn’t celebrate this, but thanks to Screaming Females I think I’ve suffered some major hearing loss. The New Brunswick, NJ-based band played Maxwell’s last year in support of their latest album Ugly and the only phrase I could conjure to describe the experience was “hot damn!” Vocalist/Guitarist Marissa Paternoster can shred like none other. It didn’t help, of course, that I clung to the wall in front of a speaker tower for the duration of the set.  My ears didn’t stop ringing for about two weeks. I suffered through the bout of mild tinnitus, barely able to hear the chorus of friends yelling, “You should’ve worn earplugs, you moron!” I didn’t care. It was worth it. That concert was by far one of the best I had been to in recent memory. A return visit to Hoboken was set for last November, however Marissa’s on-and-off battle with mono sidelined the band, forcing them to cancel the tour. Prior to that, Screaming Females opened up for Garbage for a handful of shows. Since then Marissa and Shirley Manson have become fast friends and made beautiful music together. No, seriously, that’s exactly what they did.

Marissa Paternoster + Shirley Manson = BFFs

Marissa Paternoster + Shirley Manson = BFFs

Citing mutual influence by the legendary Patti Smith, Screaming Females and Garbage have joined forces Marvel Team-Up-style to record a cover of Smith’s hit  ”Because The Night.” My heart skipped about 20 beats and I had to perform CPR on myself during Garbage’s recent show at the Wellmont Theatre. It was an absolute riot seeing Marissa and Shirley performing together live. The single will be available this Saturday on 4/20 so if you’re not, um, partaking on that day you have zero excuse as to why you didn’t snag a copy. In the meantime, do be so kind as to watch the video. Your senses will thank you–except for taste. With that said, please don’t lick your computer monitor or phone screen. That’s not very sanitary.
