Normally I keep my excitement in check with a giant grin on my face, but when Baroness finally posted the first single off their upcoming album it almost made me completely spazz out.
“Yellow & Green” marks the progressive metal band’s third full-length for Relapse Records and perhaps it’s biggest departure from their “sludge metal” roots. The guitars have a similar sound of their previous releases, but the production is much cleaner and–dare I say–more accessible. I know, the first hint of that dreaded “A-word” often spells certain doom for many bands of this type. I was worried to. It’s not too surprising seeing as how “Jake Leg,” the lead single off the previous album “Blue Record” (2009) had elements of a more traditional song structure.
Whatever “Yellow & Green” ends up sounding like I’m sold.
Have Baroness abandoned their Prog-Metal roots altogether? We’ll have to wait until July 17th to get the answer to that question. In the meantime let’s just enjoy this behemoth of a track “Take My Bones Away.”
